ANNUAL New Jersey Traffic Handler AWARDS

Although we no longer hold an annual CONFAB meeting, we still intend to recognize and honor those NJ traffic handlers who have made outstanding contributions to our nets during the year. Nominations for the three annual awards are requested at the end of each year and should be sent to your Section Traffic Managers.

Each award comes with a nice plaque which the winner gets to proudly display in his/her shack for one year.

NEW RULE: Beginning in 2003, we will accept nominations for persons who have not previously won the same award in at least ten years. Previously, repeat winners were not allowed at all. Obviously, this change applies only to the W2SWE and K2SE awards, since no one can be a "rookie of the year" twice!

W2SWE Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to NJ Traffic-handling  - The W2SWE Memorial Award was named in honor of Ed Malecki, a cornerstone of NJ Net operations throughout the 1970s. Ed epitomized the best in traffic handlers through his expertise, his volunteerism, and his mentoring. Ed died in early 1979 and the award has been made every year since 1979 by nominations from our membership.  (This is NOT an award for "flash in the pan" superstars who are "here today and gone tomorrow."  It is the highest recognition of SUSTAINED achievement, as recognized by your peers.)

W2UEZ Memorial Award for Most Promising "Rookie of the Year"  - The H. William West W2UEZ Award honors Bill West for his outstanding achievements in managing and growing the NJ Slow Net and mentoring newcomers to traffic handling. Ironically, Bill was also the first winner of the SWE award for his good deeds. Since 1981, the W2UEZ Award has been presented yearly to the most promising newcomer in NJ traffic handling – the kind of guy or gal that Bill would be proud of.
